Coeliac Screen (Gliadin tTg)

Coeliac disease is a condition in which the consumption of foods containing gluten (wheat, barley and rye) causes damage to the lining of the small intestine. The small intestine containins finger like projections called villi which normally play a role in absorbing vital nutrients from the food we eat. In coeliac disease these villi becoming flattened meaning that a coeliac sufferer becomes malnourished due to multiple nutrient deficiencies. Common symptoms of coeliac disease include diarrhoea, weight loss, vomitting, abdominal cramps, fatigue, anaemia, although sometimes there may be different symptoms or no abnormal symptoms experienced. This test measures levels of antibodies to IgG and IgA gliadin and tissue transglutaminase a very specific antibody for coeliac disease. All that is needed is a small finger prick sample of blood. The test contains everything that is needed to take the sample and to post it back to the laboratory
