Coeliac Disease May Be A Factor in Infertility and Multiple Miscarriage

Coeliac dusease is an autoimmune condition in which in susceptible individuals considerable gastrointestinal damage is done when the individual consumes gluten containing grains (wheat, rye, barley). As coeliac disease can prevent with a wide range of symptoms (diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, anaemia), many individuals with the disease may not realise that they do in fact have it. Researchers have discovered that having coeliac disease is associated with failure to conceive, multiple miscarriages and preterm births. In addition men with untreated coeliac may have abnormal sperm and lower levels of testosterone.

Male Vitamin D deficiency linked to Infertility

A recent study has shown that deficiency of vitamin D may be a factor among men who are unable to impregnate their partners. The discovery surprised the researchers, who were investigating the incidence of DNA fragmentation of sperm.

Fertility specialist Dr. Anne Clark screened the blood of almost 800 men with fertility problems, and found that almost a third had lower than normal levels of vitamin D.

Sunlight is a major source of vitamin D and levels can also be boosted by supplementation
