Thyroid Antibody Screen

Thyroid disease is commonly (though not exclusively) caused by an autoimmune process whereby the body begins to attack itself.
The two main types of autoimmune thyroid disease are Hasimotos thyroiditis (also known as hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid) and Graves disease (hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid).
This test uses ELISA technology to measure autoantibodies to thyroid peroxidase (TPO) a type of antibody produced when the body begins to attack its own thyroid gland. Anti TPO antibodies are produced in both Hashimotos thyroiditis and Graves disease and are unequivocal evidence of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Coeliac Screen (Gliadin tTg)

Coeliac disease is a condition in which the consumption of foods containing gluten (wheat, barley and rye) causes damage to the lining of the small intestine. The small intestine containins finger like projections called villi which normally play a role in absorbing vital nutrients from the food we eat. In coeliac disease these villi becoming flattened meaning that a coeliac sufferer becomes malnourished due to multiple nutrient deficiencies. Common symptoms of coeliac disease include diarrhoea, weight loss, vomitting, abdominal cramps, fatigue, anaemia, although sometimes there may be different symptoms or no abnormal symptoms experienced. This test measures levels of antibodies to IgG and IgA gliadin and tissue transglutaminase a very specific antibody for coeliac disease. All that is needed is a small finger prick sample of blood. The test contains everything that is needed to take the sample and to post it back to the laboratory

Parasite Screen

A parasite is an organism that feeds off an organism for its own survival. Although parasites are often considered to be a tropical problem they are becoming increasingly common in the western world with as many of 10% of the population infected. Parasites can cause a range of symptoms including diarrhoea, constipation, stomach cramps and discomfort and skin issues. Once identified a parasitic infection can be treated with either antibiotic agents or natural herbal alternatives. This test also screens for candida a type of yeast that can colonise in the gut and cause a range of unpleasant digestive symptoms

Adrenal Stress Index

Feeling tired, exhausted, irritable, putting on weight? The adrenal stress index measures cortisol and DHEA at 4 different times of the day from saliva samples to evaluate the body’s ability to deal with stress. Specific nutritional protocols can then be put in place to help your body to cope more effectively

Additional DescriptionMore Details
What is adrenal stress?

Prolonged or extreme stress can take its toll on the body increasing the output of stress hormones such as cortisol and DHEA from our adrenal glands (a pair of critically important glands which sit on top of our kidneys.

What causes adrenal stress?

Stress may come from a range of sources including psychological stressors, mental stress, physical stress such as exercise, infections, lack of sleep , poor nutrition, surgery, smoking, drug use and excessive alcohol consumption..

Why do this test?

The adrenal stress profile is a measure of an individual’s response to stress. Irregular output of these hormones can contribute to a number of conditions such as fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, mood swings, increased disposition towards allergies and inflammatory conditions, sleeping problems and changes in blood pressure.

How does the test work?

The test measures the levels of DHEA and cortisol in small samples of saliva taken at 4 points over the course of the day.

If I have lowered or increased levels of cortisol or DHEA what can I do? Dietary measures and certain supplements and medications can help to restore hormone levels to normal. A consultation would be helpful here to establish the most appropriate treatment programme for you

Sample requirements and turnaround times

4 small saliva samples are needed. Containers to collect these samples are provided with the test kit. Allow 5 days for delivery of the test kit. Results available within 10 days of receipt of sample.

Helicobacter Pylori

Helicobacter pylori is the most prevalent bacterial infection in the world and can cause heartburn, gastric and duodenal ulcers

Additional DescriptionMore Details
What is Helicobacter Pylori?

Helicobacter is a bacteria which can reside in the mucous coating the lining of the stomach and duodenum. It is the most commonly found bacteria affecting up to 50% of the world’s population and. The infection may be non-symptomatic in some people.

What are the symptoms of Helicobacter Pylori?

Some H.pylori infections are 'silent' and produce no symptoms, but when they do cause symptoms they are usually symptoms of gastritis or stomach ulcers. Typical symptoms of gastritis include vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain. Stomach ulcers are very similar to mouth ulcers where raw, sensitive patches develop on the lining of the stomach and cause a gnawing or burning pain. The pain can last for minutes or hours and will often feel worse on an empty stomach. Many people assume they have heartburn, as antacid medicine will often relieve the symptoms.

Why test for Helicobacter Pylori?

Detection is important to relieve the symptoms and even if there are no symptoms it is important to eradicate the bacteria as sufferers are at an increased risk of developing gastric and duodenal ulcers

How does the test work?

The test is a finger prick blood test which detects antibodies in the blood to Helicobacter pylori. Once you receive your test kit all you have to do is take a few drops of blood from a finger prick using the kit provided. The blood is collected in a small vial. You put the sample into the envelope provided and post it straight back to the laboratory (Freepost RRHL-EAES, Lab 21 Limited, 184 Science Park, Cambridge, CB4 OGA Allow 5 days for delivery of the test kit. Results are available within 10 working days.

Candida Testing

Candida is at the route of many health problems. This simple finger prick blood test identifies the level of candida antibodies in the blood. Excellent value at only £70.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
What is Candida?

Candida usually means Candida albicans, which is a type of yeast, although there are other types of yeast which can colonise in the GI tract. Candida is is a normal inhabitant of the human gut and plays a role in breaking down complex sugars. However, when it grows out of control and becomes dominant in the gut, it can cause many problems. An overgrowth of Candida is also known as Candidiasis or Yeast Overgrowth.

What are the symptoms?

Candida overgrowth can cause a variety of different symptoms including:

  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Acid reflux
  • Bladder infections
  • Flatulence
  • Food intolerances
  • Muscle aches
  • Fungal infections of nail or skin
  • Dry, itchy skin
  • White coating on tongue
  • Joint swelling
  • Mood swings
  • Increased allergies
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue or low energy

Candida is not the only condition that can cause these symptoms but if you suffer from a number of the above then Candida may be the reason, or part of the reason you are suffering.

What causes Candida?

Factors which encourage Candida overgrowth include: antibiotics, oral contraceptives, steroid drugs, stress, two or more pregnancies, smoking and consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta or rice

Why test for Candida?

Because there may be other reasons for the symptoms that you are experiencing it is good to test for candida to be sure that you are following the right course of action.

How does the test work?

Cambridge Nutritional Sciences offer a test for the antibody response to Candida by measuring the IgG and IgM antibody levels using the highly accurate ELISA technology.

Many other tests are limited as they can be influenced by small ‘normal’ amounts of Candida albicans, and a positive negative result may occur. Our test is an effective diagnostic and treatment monitoring tool as results will indicate past, ongoing or current infection.

If I have high levels of Candida, what can I do?

A consultation can be helpful to advise you on the most appropriate treatment programme. We also advise that if possible you get tested for food intolerances as these are commonly caused by a candida overgrowth and can influence recovery. Please see the food intolerance section of the site to find out what options are available

Sample requirements and test turnaround.

A finger prick blood sample is needed. Once you receive your test kit all you have to do is prck your finger using the kit provided and take a small amount of blood using the kit supplied. Then simply send the sample back to the lab in the box provided.

Allow 5 days for delivery of the test kit. Results are available within 10 working days. Any information provided by Cambridge Nutritional Sciences/ www.thenutritionlink.co.uk is not intended to replace advice from your GP.
